Ezra 1 - 4
Topic:
Trusting The Lord
Text: Jeremiah 17:1-8
People
depend on various sources for their protection: retired police
and army officers, charms, secret societies and Alsatian dogs.
However, Proverbs 21:31 has this to say, “The horse is prepared
against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.” Safety
or protection comes from the Lord. The only bodyguard who will
not run away from you at any crucial time is God.
In
fact, Jeremiah 17:5-8 has this to say “Thus said the LORD;
cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm,
and whose heart departeth from the LORD. For he shall be like
the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but
shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt
land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the
LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted
by the water, and that spreadeth out he roots by the river, and
shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and
shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease
from yielding fruit.” God says if you put your trust in
man, you have pronounced curse on yourself. When you put your
trust in God, whatever may be happening, there would be succor.
Yet,
we discover that some people put their trust in something else,
apart from God. “Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed;
he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength
of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses:
but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. They are brought
down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright” (Psalm
20:6-8).
Those
who put their trust in other things apart from God will fall while
those who put their trust in God will stand. It is very dangerous
to put your trust in man. “Woe to them that go down to Egypt
for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they
are man, and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they
look unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD! “Now
the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and
not spirit. When the Lord shall stretch out his hand, both he
that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down
and they shall fail together.” (Isaiah 31:1 and 3). If you
place your trust in man you will be disappointed. If you put your
trust in God, you are secure.
